Football: Canby 42, Tigard 28
Canby senior Gavin Osterberg celebrates after making a tackle during the Cougars' 42-28 victory over Tigard on Friday night at Canby High School.
For the past three weeks, Bryan Takano had stood anxiously on the sidelines waiting for his chance to return.
The Canby High School senior fullback was expected to play a big role this season but a high ankle sprain more than six weeks ago sidelined him.
Takano briefly returned in early October against Grant, but was re-injured again in the first quarter.
On Friday night, Takano made an immediate impact upon his return with an 84-yard touchdown run in No. 3 Canby’s 42-28 victory over Tigard at Canby High School.
The senior had seven carries for a team-high 130 yards.
“It feels real good because three weeks off is pretty hard my senior season,” Takano said. “I mean, w
hat more could I ask for (Friday night)? Tonight was perfect. It was more than perfect, it was better than I thought it was going to be.”
Takano broke loose for his 84-yard run midway through the second quarter that gave the Cougars a 21-7 lead heading into halftime.
“To be honest, I thought they were going to catch me,” he said, smiling. “I was pretty tired. I’ve been off three weeks, so I’m a little sore.”
Senior quarterback Josh Yoder, who has risen into one of the state’s best passers, continued his strong efficient performance, going 11 of 15 for 189 yards and two touchdowns.
This season, Yoder has completed 95 of 138 attempts for 1,457 yards, along with 13 touchdowns and just three interceptions.
Yoder also displayed his skill as a runner, scoring on an 84-yard touchdown run with 9:51 to go in the second quarter that gave Canby a 14-7 lead.
“I saw an open gap and I just took off,” Yoder said. “And Ryan Wall made a big key block. It felt like a long way.”
Tigard never showed any threat to make a game of it as the Cougars led by as many as 21 points in the second half when junior Adam Bell returned an onside kick 37 yards for a touchdown and a 42-21 lead with 3:01 to go in the game.
For Canby, the win served as revenge over Tigard, who had beaten the Cougars the past two years to knock them out of an outright league championship and No. 1 seed in the playoffs.
With the victory, Canby (7-1 overall, 4-0 Pacific) sewed up the No. 1 seed out of the conference heading into the Class 6A state playoffs in two weeks. The Cougars can finish its perfect league season at Forest Grove on Friday at 7 p.m.
“We’re playing good football,” coach Mike Doty said. “We have settled in with the group we have and we’re finding ways to get the job done.”
Seniors Ryan Wall and Masson Meserve each had touchdown receptions for Canby, and sophomore Kyle Bartram scored on a 1-yard run in the third.
Tigard was led by junior fullback Beau Hansen, who had 29 carries for 142 yards and one touchdown.
