McMINNVILLE – About the only drama left in Friday night’s victory for No. 4 Canby was whether or not it would hit the 50-point mark for the first time since 2007.

The Cougars, who believed they underestimated their opponents the past three weeks, did not give McMinnville any signs of hope in a 49-13 win at McMinnville High School.

It marked Canby’s third consecutive victory heading into next week’s big matchup against Tualatin in what could decide the Pacific Conference championship.

“The past few weeks, we haven’t been practicing well,” senior quarterback Josh Yoder said. “So the coaches really emphasized practicing hard and we came out andGot a News Tip? showed it. We got our run game back this week, too.”

Yoder was 12 of 14 for 175 yards with one touchdown, playing one series of the second half before Canby’s reserves finished out the game.

And the Cougars continually saw the emergence of several players who started the season deep on the depth chart, and are having a chance to play with many starters injured.

Five different Canby players scored touchdowns led by juniors Adam Bell and Dustin Hagaman.

Bell totaled nine carries for 39 yards and two touchdowns, and Hagaman had eight carries for 108 yards and two touchdowns, including a 63-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

“It was everything we wanted,” coach Mike Doty said of the game plan.

Canby took the opening lead when Bell scored on a 2-yard run with 7:46 to go in the first. After McMinnville responded with a 51-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Connor White to senior Ethan Daugherty, the Cougars answered when junior Erik Jernstrom rumbled for a 22-yard touchdown run to end the first quarter for a 14-7 lead.

From then on, Canby poured it on.

The Cougars took a 28-7 lead into halftime as senior Gavin Osterberg scored on a 12-yard run and Yoder completed a 9-yard touchdown pass to senior Masson Meserve in the second quarter.

Canby’s offense outgained McMinnville, 345-104, in total yards in the first half.

“We knew they were dominantly run,” said junior Brandon Harms, who had two interceptions in the game. “And once we stopped the run, we just had to stay on top of their receivers because we didn’t think they could beat us just by the pass.”

The second half was much the same as Bell scored on a 3-yard run to begin the third quarter for a 35-7 lead. Hagaman then scored his team’s final two touchdowns, which included a 63-yard run in the third and a 2-yard run in the fourth.

The Grizzlies scored their final touchdown on junior Josh Nice’s 17-yard run.

The 13 points allowed were the second fewest this season for Canby, who entered with the conference’s leading defense and 11th best in the state by allowing just 18.6 points per game.

“Defensively, we played very, very well,” Doty said. “(Defensive coordinator) Mike Vaught put in the old 4-4, 4-3 (scheme) that we used to run in years past. And he along with Jim Schlatter, the defensive line coach, and Grant Boustead, defensive secondary coach, schemed those kids up pretty good in one week.”

Canby (5-1 overall, 2-0 Pacific) now meets Tualatin (4-2, 2-0) next Friday night at Canby High School at 7 p.m.

The matchup has annually become one the key games that has implications on the conference title.

The Timberwolves are coming off a 49-14 victory over Forest Grove, but Canby has won the past three matchups.
