PORTLAND – Rodi Samoilov stood on the sidelines during the first quarter of Friday’s game not knowing how much playing time he would get.

The Canby High School senior fullback entered as No. 3 on the depth chart behind seniors Ricky Nanez and Bryan Takano.

But as lingering injuries took out Nanez and Takano on the first two series of the game, Canby coach Mike Doty called on Samoilov to take the position the rest of the game.

And the backup fullback answered in a big way, scoring two touchdowns including the game-winner to help No. 9 Canby to a 27-24 victory over No. 3 Grant at Lincoln High School.

“Right after Ricky came out, Doty was like, ‘You’re going in,’” Samoilov said. “And Got a News Tip?I was like, ‘All right, cool.’ And then Bryan went down and I said, I got to definitely step up. I was kind of bummed that they went out but I said, man this is my chance now.”

Samoilov muscled his way through the Grant defense to score on a 3-yard touchdown with 41 seconds left in the game for a 25-24 lead. Senior quarterback Josh Yoder then connected with junior wingback Brandon Harms on the two-point conversion to give Canby a 27-24 lead.

“Rodi had his chance tonight,” Doty said. “No. 1 went down, No. 2 went down and Rodi stepped up and did a great job at fullback. He ran the ball tough, found the holes and got himself in there and has earned himself that position.”
Defensively, Canby’s main focal point was Grant senior quarterback Kenneth Acker, whose speed and athleticism was a big factor the entire game.

Acker was held in check for the most part, rushing nine times for 34 yards. He also had two receptions for 37 yards, but completed just 2 for 8 pass attempts for 20 yards with three interceptions.

In opening quarter, Acker also had a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, and defensively had two interceptions.
“We just had to contain him really,” said Harms, who had all three interceptions on defense. “He’s a good running quarterback. When he passed the ball, we were there to cover him and it was really about containing his running more because he’s a better runner than passer.”

Canby took an early 7-0 lead when Yoder found junior Adam Bell on a 25-yard touchdown with 8:24 to go in the first. Grant answered with Acker’s long kickoff return, followed by senior Chris Edmonds’ 32-yard field goal for a 10-7 lead.

Samoilov scored on a 3-yard run with 8:23 to go in the second to give the Cougars a 13-10 lead. The Generals then closed the first half with Acker’s 10-yard touchdown run and junior Trevionte Riley’s 57-yard touchdown run for a 24-13 halftime lead.

Grant would not score in the second half as Bell helped close the gap with a 5-yard touchdown run with 5:36 to go in the third to cut the lead to 24-19.

“We kept shooting ourselves in the foot and one thing led to another to another to another,” Doty said. “Our level of play dropped off because our confidence level dropped off during that first half. We got a series of breaks, they had a series of bad snaps and fumbles, but we took advantage of it.”

Up next, Canby (3-1 overall) begins Pacific Conference play next Thursday when it hosts Newberg at 7 p.m.
