Wednesday, Canby and the nation paused to say thanks to the men and women of the country’s armed forces.

November 11 is the day set aside to honor those who wear or have worn their country’s uniform in times of war, in times of peace.

The observances ranged from the wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery to more modest commemorations in small-town cemeteries and meeting rooms.

In Canby, members of the Canby American Legion Post 122 and Canby-Aurora VFW Post 6057 and auxiliary presented the colors at the noon lunch at the Canby Adult Center.

The colors were carried by Bob House, Murray Taylor, Bob Root and John Lance.

Those attenGot a News Tip?ding sat at tables with colorful placemats illustrated with Continental soldiers, American Eagles and the Statue of Liberty. Miniature flags and flowers set in cans of Spam were the place settings.

Everyone pledged allegiance to the flag and sang “The Star Spangled Banner” and “America the Beautiful.”

Veterans in attendance stood and were recognized, including Al Phillips, 87, of Canby, who wore his 101st Airborne cap commemorating the unit he served with in Europe during World War II.

But no matter how grand or modest the scale of the observances one thing remained the same — the immense measure of gratitude and appreciation.
