Canby High School senior Jordan Knigge made his return to the lineup, helping the Cougars defeat North Medford, 62-24 on Friday night in the first round of the Class 6A state playoffs.
CANBY -- No. 3 Canby found itself in a fight midway through the second quarter, but eventually saw its depth wear down North Medford.
The Cougars scored 41 of the final 44 points of the game en route to a 62-24 victory over the Black Tornado on Friday night in the first round of the Class 6A state playoffs at Canby High School.
With the score tied, 21-21, in the second quarter, Canby senior fullback Ricky Nanez outraced North Medford's defense for an 88-yard touchdown run with 4:34 left to give the Cougars a 28-21 lead. The game marked Nanez's first in five weeks since spraining his ankle on the second play of the contest against Grant in the preseason, forcing him to miss the entire conference season.
The Cougars followed it up with senior Cody Smith's 32-yard touchdown pass to junior Adam Bell with 36 seconds to go as they entered halftime with a 35-21 advantage.
In the second half, senior Nikita Martishev intercepted North Medford junior quarterback Brian Reese on the Black Tornado's first series. Canby followed it up with senior Bryan Takano's 1-yard touchdown run with 9:20 left for a 42-21 lead.
After North Medford converted on a 26-yard field goal in the third, Canby junior Brandon Harms intercepted Reese and ran 72 yards for a touchdown and a 49-24 lead with 11:26 to go in the game.
Senoir fullback Rodi Samoilov then scored on a 1-yard run with 9:18 left for a 55-24 lead. Junior Trevor Seehaver capped the victory with a 6-yard touchdown -- his first varsity score of his career -- with 2:26 lefft.
In the first quarter, Canby jumped out to a 13-0 lead with Takano's 2-yard touchdown run and Harms' 3-yard scoring run with 4:33 left. When it looked as if the Cougars would cruise the rest of the way, North Medford came up with a string of momentum-changing special teams plays.
Junior Fiki Silafau returned the ensuing kick-off 91 yards for a touchdown. After Canby botched the following punt snap that sailed over the head of the punter and was then blocked, Reese found senior Jeremy Scottow on a 14-yard touchdown pass with 1:28 left in the first quarter for a 14-13 lead.
Canby then took a 21-14 lead in the second quarter when senior quarterback Josh Yoder found senior Cody Smith on a 64-yard touchdown pass with 7:41 to go, followed by Harms' run in for a 2-point conversion. The Black Tornado immediately tied it up when Reese connected with Scottow on a 76-yard touchdown pass with 5:12 left.
The 62 points tied for the highest scoring output under Doty’s 19-year tenure at Canby. The last time was on Oct. 31, 1997 when Canby defeated Tualatin, 62-28, on the road.
It also marked the fourth time the Cougars have scored at least 60 points in a game under the Doty era.
Up next, the Cougars will battle Sprague in the second round of the Class 6A state playoffs at a date and time yet to be determined at Sprague High School.
