HILLSBORO -- Not many people expected No. 9 Canby to reach the Class 6A state quarterfinals, much less the semifinals.
But the Cougars for the second consecutive season played their best volleyball at the right time, and placed fifth overall at the OSAA Class 6A volleyball state championships on Saturday at Liberty High School.
Canby fell to Sunset in a thrilling five-game match, 18-25, 25-22, 25-18, 20-25, 15-8. Earlier in the season, Sunset had dominated the Cougars in a three-game sweep, but Saturday was quite the contrast.
Canby earned its second straight state trophy -- and second in school history -- after taking fourth last season. It marked the Cougars' third consecutive trip to the state quart
erfinals after the program had not reached this far before.
The match marked the final game for four seniors, including Katrina Zens, Ashley Bugni, Sarah Payne and Nicole Schwend.
