Canby senior Bryan Takano scored three touchdowns in the first half of Friday's 49-21 victory over Forest Grove.
FOREST GROVE – The result was never in doubt.
The game was never close, and for No. 3 Canby, it was exactly what it wanted before heading into the Class 6A state playoffs next week.
The Cougars earned the outright Pacific Conference championship, finishing with a perfect 5-0 league season with a 49-21 victory over Forest Grove on Friday night at Forest Grove High School.
The win was Canby’s sixth in a row, serving as a reminder that the team is playing some of the best football in the state.
“We didn’t want to come in too overconfident or anything, but we wanted to get a big lead early,” senior quarterback Josh Yoder said. “And (we wanted to) get all the guys who have been the practice guy
s all season long playing time, and we made that happen early.”
The Cougars improved to 8-1 overall and 5-0 in conference play, marking the first time they have finished with a perfect league mark since the 2006 campaign. That season, Canby advanced to the Class 6A semifinals before falling to Jesuit, 63-21.
The Cougars will host a first-round playoff matchup on Friday at 7 p.m. against the North Medford Black Tornado, who finished fourth in the Southwest Conference. North Medford ended its season losing four of its last six games, including Friday’s 33-17 loss to Roseburg.
The Cougars jumped on Forest Grove early, scoring on five of their six offensive possessions in the first half.
By halftime, Canby had a commanding 42-0 lead. It outgained the Vikings on offense in total yardage, 356-69.
Senior fullback Bryan Takano continued to have an impact in his second game back from injury with seven carries for 49 yards and three touchdowns – all in the first half.
Takano scored on two 1-yard runs in the first quarter, and the Cougars scored their third touchdown of the first 12 minutes when Yoder found senior tight end Aaron Rouza with a 14-yard touchdown pass for a 21-0 lead.
In the second quarter, Canby did not let up as Takano scored again on a 19-yard run for a 28-0 lead with 5:03 to go.
Senior defensive linemen Caleb Coon then had the highlight, stripping the ball from Forest Grove sophomore running back Jon Dober and running it back 10 yards for a touchdown and a 35-0 lead with 4:46 left.
Canby capped an impressive first half when junior Dustin Hagaman scored on a 4-yard run with 34.1 seconds to go for a 42-0 lead.
“(It was) everything we wanted,” coach Mike Doty said. “We got the big lead in the first half. We were pretty dog gone efficient, particularly with our perimeter running game, which allowed us to play all the No. 1’s and 2’s in the first half, and then all of the 3’s and 4’s in the second half. So a lot of kids got a lot of playing time and that’s exactly what we wanted to do.”
The passing game, which had been a threat for Canby all season long, was not needed as Yoder was 6 of 10 for 52 yards and a touchdown as he sat the entire second half.
Doty said he felt his team certainly earned the league championship.
“With the rash of injuries we had – usually having 10, 11 and 12 kids out, it really speaks to the depth of this football team,” he said. “Because we had a lot of guys playing more significant roles than we had anticipated and they stepped in and did a great job with it.”
