North Marion girls quartet earns recognition in conference
Two seniors, two juniors get all-league awards for Huskies

AURORA — Four North Marion girls soccer players were honored for one of the more successful seasons for the program.
The Huskies were one victory away from the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A state playoffs, which would have been their second state-playoff appearance in school history.
North Marion fell to La Salle, 2-1, on Nov. 3 in the Capital Conference playoffs to determine the league’s No. 3 seed.
“At the beginning of the year, we talked about it that we could make league playoffs,” coach Grant Hartenstein said. “And if we can stick together, we have a shot at making the state tournament. That was something we talked about during the summer. I sat down with the seniors and they were on board with it wand
wanted to make that happen. Unfortunately, it fell a little short.”
Headlining this year’s all-league list were junior forward Halee Pyatt and senior midfielder Jenna Huapeo, who were All-Capital Conference first-team selections in a vote done by the league’s coaches.
Pyatt was the Huskies’ leading scorer with nine goals this season, and Huapeo added three goals and three assists and was the team’s best striker.
Senior goalkeeper Jenaya Surcamp, who was a four-year varsity player, was named an all-league second team selection and junior defender Andrea Audritsh was an honorable mention.
Hartenstein also earned conference coach of the year honors.
North Marion graduated three other seniors, including defender Lindsey Evensen, a team captain, defender Baylie Dady and midfielder Caroline Cregger.
Huapeo, Surcamp, Evensen and Dady were all four-year varsity players under Hartenstein.
For that quartet, they continued to take a step forward each season after not winning a game during their freshman year.
“It was tough for them as freshmen,” Hartenstein said. “We didn’t have strong upperclassmen to shoulder the load so I had to bring up some freshmen to play. Jenaya started every game for four years so it made them better and they took their lumps.
“I’m proud of them for sticking with it. It would’ve been easy for them to quit but they stuck with it.”
Even though there will be holes in the team’s leadership to be filled heading into next season, Hartenstein said he is optimistic with numbers slowly increasing and North Marion returning its second- and third-leading scorers with sophomores Clarissa Caballero (five) and Briana Martinez (four).
“We’re young and I really like our talent,” Hartenstein said. “I think we have one of the more talented freshmen classes and we look forward to those girls stepping in and filling the void left by our seniors. But I think we’re in pretty good shape, got good numbers as freshmen, sophomores and juniors. We got really good numbers and we’ll be pretty competitive next year.”
Notes:
The Huskies finished the season 7-7-3 overall and 4-6-2 in league play, taking fourth place. … Gladstone sophomore Haleigh Murrell was named the conference offensive player of the year. … Gladstone junior Kellie Skofstad was conference defensive player of the year. … Gladstone (17-0-1, 12-0-0) won the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A state championship with a 2-0 win over Catlin Gable.
