January

  • Nine varsity competitors and 11 second-varsity wrestlers claim tournament titles for the Canby High School wrestling team at the sixth annual Larry Owings Invitational at CHS. Canby blew away Glencoe, Sandy and Oregon City to win the team title.

  • Canby, locked in a tight 14-13 game at halftime, erupted in the second half to score a 52-29 victory over Dallas in a Pacific-8 Conference girls basketball matchup. The team followed with victories over Silverton and McMinnville to get back in the Pac-8 playoff race at 3-3.
  • Brett Fuge came alive for the Canby High School boys basketball team, scoring 13 points in the fourth quarter of a 45-34 defeat of Silverton, boosting the Cougars to 3-1 in league.
  • Competing in the 20-school Oregon Wrestling Classic, Canby wins three of five duals to place a respectable sixth.
  • In a thrilling Capital Conference boys basketball matchup, North Marion got some late-game heroics from Adam Kraft and Tucker Brack in a 79-76 overtime victory over Woodburn. Kraft made a layup with 25 seconds to play, and Brack sealed it with a free throw with four ticks showing.
  • Canby lost on the scoreboard, but the Cougars enjoyed their best overall swim meet of the year against McMinnville. Virtually everyone in the CHS lineup set at least one personal-best time.

February

  • North Marion's girls basketball team helped its playoff chances with a 54-46 victory over Sweet Home. Heather Koenig scored 11 points for the Huskies, who improved to 4-4 in Capital Conference play.
  • Losses to Dallas and Newberg cost the Canby High School girls basketball team any chance of reaching the playoffs, dropping the girls to 3-8 on the season.
  • In a meet of surprises, Canby's Lisa Champ and John Lyon both made the state cut as individuals, and three CHS relay teams also make it after a strong showing at the Pac-8 Conference district meet. Sarah Anderson, swimming the 50-yard freestyle, also made it to state as an individual. A week later, at the state meet, Champ swims the 100 freestyle in 53.48 seconds to place second, becoming the school's all-time top state finisher.
  • Canby, by virtue of its 55-45 defeat of Tigard, gave itself a chance to reach the Class 4A boys basketball playoffs with one game, against Forest Grove, left on the schedule. Unfortunately, a 71-65 loss to the Vikings cost CHS a chance to finish as high as third in the league race.
  • Canby 112-pound wrestler Lucas Hambleton won his weight to lead the school's wrestling team to a third-place team finish at the district championships. In all, seven Canby individuals ualify for the state meet. Leading Canby at state were Garret Miyake and Hambleton, who placed a respective fourth and sixth in action from Memorial Coliseum.
  • Former Canby High School soccer star Cody Hagler signed a letter of intent to suit up for the University of Portland men's team.
  • Kelley Carpenter poured in a school-record 34 points to lead the North Marion girls basketball team to a 68-61 overtime victory over previously unbeaten Woodburn. The result put the Husky girls in the playoffs.

March

  • A last-second shot by Kristen Kahle lifted the North Marion girls basketball team past Molalla in a Capital Conference playoff game, 47-46, and the Huskies followed with a 63-46 blowout of Cascade in a second-round matchup. That put the girls in the subtournament of the Class 3A playoffs.
  • North Marion's dream season finally ended, though, with a 69-50 loss to Wilsonville, which would go on to place sixth at the state tournament.
  • North Marion's boys basketball team reached the Capital Conference playoffs before getting eliminated from the postseason with a 71-59 loss to Molalla.
  • Canby High's baseball team recovered from a shaky start, an 11-2 loss to West Linn, to record a 6-2 defeat of Centennial. The team then took a trip to Arizona, where it won three of four games.
  • Canby High's softball team made a first-ever spring break trip to Arizona and came home a winner, taking all three of its games in Tuscon, Ariz. Led by the pitching of Joanna Barstad, the team was 7-0 by month's end.
  • The North Marion baseball team lived up to its reputation as the state's top-ranked Class 3A program, going 11-1 during the month.

April

  • Canby served notice that it was a girls tennis team to be reckoned with, blowing out Silverton 8-0 to improve to 4-1 in Pacific-8 Conference matches.
  • A pair of North Marion track and field records were set within a week, as Erin Gerhardt dashed the 3,000-meter race in 11 minutes, 19.5 seconds and the school's 1,600 boys relay team clocked a time of 3:37.99.
  • Canby distance runner Eric Logsdon ran the state's fastest 1,500-meter race of the season, clocking in at 3:57.4 to break the 14-year-old mark of Mark Webber (3:58.86). Canby's Bethanie Evans also set a CHS track record, clearing 9 feet, 7 inches in the pole vault to better her own mark. Logsdon would later set another record when he went 8:27.8 in the 3,000 - the fastest time in the nation in 2000 and the 10th-fastest in Oregon high school track history.
  • The North Marion baseball team continued its roll through the league, rocking Sweet Home 14-2 to push its league record to 4-0. The suad would continue its winning ways all month long, with a highlight coming when Jeremy Miller threw a 10-0 no-hitter at Molalla.
  • Canby moved into position to reach the Class 4A softball playoffs, as pitcher Joanna Barstad recorded key 1-0 victories over rivals Tigard and Forest Grove late in the month.
  • Canby High School girls basketball coach Ray Fields announced his resignation from the job, ending a 27-year career as a coach.
  • The Canby baseball team maintained its third-place position in the league race, compiling a 7-4 mark in Pac-8 action by month's end.

May

  • North Marion locked up its fourth straight Capital Conference baseball title with a 13-0 shutout of Cascade. By month's end, the team was 25-1 as it entered the Class 3A state playoffs.
  • Once there, the Huskies got as far as the semifinals before being eliminated with a 11-3 loss to Philomath.
  • In a Pac-8 boys golf shocker, Canby and Dallas overtook Tualatin to get a one-two finish at the district competition. Leading the way for the Cougars was freshman Ryan Gilmour, who didn't let a little wind and rain prevent him from shooting a 78-79 - 157. The title was Canby's second straight. At the state competition, Canby settled for 13th place as a team.
  • Amber Kallstrom's consistency paid off at the Pac-8 district golf tournament, as she fired a 94 on the first day and a 99 on the second to finish with a 193 - good for second place and a spot at state.
  • Canby tuned up for the state playoffs by winning two of its final three Pac-8 softball games. As the league's No. 2 seed, the girls knocked off Reynolds 1-0 in the opening round of state before falling 3-1 to North Eugene in the second round.
  • The CHS baseball team played Redmond tough before ultimately dropping a 2-1 decision in the opening round of the 4A state playoffs.
  • Canby runner Eric Logsdon continued his dream season with yet another record - this time running the district 3,000-meter race in 8:22.46, the seventh-fastest time in Oregon high school history.
  • All told, four CHS athletes reached the state meet - Logsdon, pole vaulter Bethanie Evans and hurdlers Rob Bolton and Spencer Porter. But it was Logsdon who stole the show at state, as he won both the 1,500 and 3,000 meters. His 8:08 time in the 3,000 challenged the legendary Steve Prefontaine and was arguably the highlight of the state competition in Eugene.
  • Pole vaulter Evans also fared well, placing sixth in her event. nNorth Marion's Mark Briant placed third in the state high jump finals with a leap of 6 feet, 4 inches. Meanwhile, runner Erin Gerhardt was sixth in the 3,000 and eighth in the 1,500.

July - December

July

  • A clutch RBI single in the final inning of the final game lifted the Canby American Legion A baseball team to a 7-6 victory over Gresham in the finals of a Beaverton tournament. Scott Sweet's liner to right scored Matt Oss with the winning run with one out in the seventh inning
  • Keith Baker, who served 20 years as a teacher and administrator at Canby High School, announced his plans to take a position with the Portland Public School District. He had served as CHS' athletic director for the past five years.
  • North Marion, a 3A school taking on 4A competition, came away the champion from the Zone 7 American Legion baseball tournament, setting up a playoff date with Tigard. The Huskies won their series and eventually ualified for the eight-team AAA state tournament with a 3-2 victory over Beaverton. Canby, meanwhile, was eliminated from competition with a pair of losses to Forest Grove.
  • Tonna Brooks, a 15-year-old Canby euestrian competitor, represented her country at the 2000 Youth uarter Horse World Cup competition in Portogruaro, Italy.
  • Fifty-nine teams from all over the region converged on the streets of Canby for the first Canby Rotary Nothing But Net 3-on-3 basketball tournament. The two-day event featured men's and women's teams in eight divisions while also featuring free throw, three-point and slam dunk contests. nThe Northwest Extreme, a 16-and-under A girls softball team, went undefeated in the 21-team state championship tournament in Beaverton.
  • A Canby Junior Federal team followed up its third-place county performance by getting the same placement at state. The team won its first two games before getting defeated twice.
  • Lisa Champ finished either first or second in each of her events to lead the Canby Gators to a 10th-place team finish at the Speedo Oregon Swimming 11-and-over state championships in Pendleton.

August

  • North Marion's magical run through the AAA Legion baseball playoffs finally ended, as the team dropped state games to Klamath Falls and Columbia Gorge. With only 10 players and no bullpen, the team's lack of depth finally caught up to it.
  • Still, the Huskies did amazingly well considering the fact they took on teams that featured all-stars from four or five high schools.
  • Eric Logsdon, who won a pair of state 4A track titles in the spring, was selected as the 2000 Gatorade Oregon High School Track and Field Athlete of the Year.
  • A former world wrestling champion, Randy Couture, was among those who paid a visit to Canby for a wrestling camp.
  • Once again, the Clackamas County Rodeo drew some of the biggest names in the business Aug. 15-20. Three of the Professional Cowboys Rodeo Association's standings leaders were among those on hand for the event, won by Molalla cowboy Ross Coleman. Coleman, who pocketed nearly $3,500 for all-around honors, became the first local man to win the honor in years.
  • Dennis Burke, hired to replace the departed Keith Baker, began his role as the new athletic director at Canby High School.
  • Canby runner Dennis Brands ran fourth at the National Hershey's Track and Field Championships in Pennsylvania. The Canby High School freshman was fourth in the 13-14 Boys 1,600-meter race, clocking a time of 5 minutes, .59 seconds.
  • Canby swimmer Lisa Champ won three of her six races and posted best times in all but one of her swims at the Western Zones Championships in Fresno, Calif. She also just missed a Junior National time.

September

  • Canby got off to a uick start to the high school football season, winning its first three games. It was a far cry from the season before, when the Cougars only won one game all season.
  • In a classic seesaw battle of a football game, top-ranked Scappoose outlasted North Marion 62-47 despite Husky uarterback Jeremy Miller's 540-yard, six-touchdowns passing performance.
  • After struggling to score in its first four matches, the Canby High School boys soccer team broke out of its slump with a 3-1 defeat of Beaverton, lifting the suad to 2-2-1 by month's end.
  • The Canby High volleyball team jumped out to a 4-1 record in league play, picking up critical road victories over Tigard and Silverton.
  • Canby's Jean-Marie Peterson and Zoe Anton finished a respective first and second to lead the way for the CHS cross country team in the suad's league opener with Silverton and McMinnville.
  • North Marion cross country runner Erin Gerhardt lived up to her reputation as one of the state's best 3A runners when she placed fifth out of 172 athletes at the Seaside Three Course Challenge race on the Oregon Coast.

October

  • In a defensive struggle between Capital Conference rivals North Marion and Cascade, the Cougars outlasted the Huskies 8-6, hurting North Marion's chances to make the Class 3A playoffs.
  • After getting off to a 3-0 start, the Canby football team ran into some tough Pacific-9 Conference competition in October, dropping a 40-22 game to Tigard, a 21-0 decision to Tualatin and a 17-0 loss to Dallas. But the Cougars weren't uite done, winning a key game over McMinnville to keep playoff hopes alive. Canby then came up with a big 30-21 comeback win over Silverton, as Kamal Salem rushed for 183 yards and two touchdowns.
  • Canby kept alive its hopes of making the Class 4A volleyball playoffs, knocking off Tualatin and Newberg, two schools who had beaten the Cougars earlier in the season.
  • For the first time since the 1988 season, the Canby High School boys soccer team missed the 4A playoffs. A 0-0 tie with Tualatin in the season finale eliminated the Cougars from the postseason picture, ending their year at 2-3-3 and in seventh place.
  • Victories by Sean Coleman, Christina Mangan, Adam Peterson and Matt Peterman won their respective races to pace the Ackerman Middle School cross country program at its district championships.
  • The Canby High School girls cross country team made a bit of history when the Cougars became the first CHS team since 1985 to reach the state meet. Canby, led by the victorious Jean-Marie Peterson, won the Pac-9 district meet by scoring a meet-low 43 points. Tigard was a distant second with 62 points.
  • North Marion runner Erin Gerhardt ualified for her third straight Class 3A state cross country meet with a fourth-place finish at the Capital Conference district championships.

November

  • Canby hopes of making the Class 4A state football playoffs ended with the team's season-ending 28-8 loss to Newberg on the final day of the regular season. Still, Canby finished a respectable 5-4 on the year, a vast improvement on the one-win season of 1999.
  • Canby, coming off a district-winning performance, came through with a solid sixth-place showing at the Class 4A girls cross country state championship meet in Eugene. Leading the charge was Jean-Marie Peterson, whose time of 19:33 placed her ninth overall.
  • North Marion capped off its football season in style, winning its final two games. In the finale, a 44-36 victory over Stayton, came back from a 22-6 deficit to pull it out.
  • A group of Canby cross country athletes gave some big-city teams a run for their money at the USA Track and Field Regional Cross Country Championships in Seattle. Leading the way was the city's Youth Boys team, which edged Seattle to ualify for nationals.
  • The Canby girls basketball team got its season off on the right foot, as the Cougars scored a 48-37 victory over Hood River. Laura Ivancie's 20 points led the team.

December

  • Canby picked up its fourth straight Lane County Invitational wrestling title with a 4-0 dual-meet showing in the 16-team high school event. Four Canby wrestlers - Stephen Schantin, Ian Gadberry, Garret Miyake and Jared Wilson - were individual champs.
  • North Marion served notice it was a high school girls basketball team to watch, overcoming a lackluster first half to blow out La Salle 72-38. The team would eventually open 3-0, the program's best start in 20 years.
  • Canby's girls basketball team used a balanced attack to beat Franklin 74-24 and improve to 2-1 on the season. The girls later opened the Pac-9 season on a good note, beating McMinnville 49-38.
  • North Marion's boys basketball team kicked off the new year with a fast start, winning five of its first six games.
