Canby held its own in spurts last week against Wilson and West Albany, but ultimately, that wasn't enough to carry the Canby High School boys basketball team to victories in either game.

Thursday at Wilson, the Cougars put together perhaps their best quarter of the season, playing the Trojans to a 15-15 tie after one period, but a lapse in the second quarter opened the door for Wilson to pull away for a 74-55 victory that dropped CHS to 0-4 on the season.

Two nights before, the host Cougars struggled to keep West Albany out of the paint in a 61-56 defeat in Canby.

With that, Canby was left with a series of questions to answer as the team embarks on its Pacific-9 Conference schedule this week. The boys were at Newberg Friday and will be home for Tualatin Friday at 7:15 p.m.

"We're playing well in spurts, but we've struggled with consistency on both ends of the floor," head coach Dennis Burke said of his team's slow start.

"Defensively, we were soft against West Albany. We were lethargic and they picked us apart inside. Their leading scorer (Byron Orth) had 25 points, and I don't think he ever had to leave the basket.

''We came out strong against Wilson, but again we started making turnovers and missing shots with the game on the line. They're a very good team and they earned it, but we could've been a lot more competitive.''

The Cougars only trailed by seven late in the third quarter Thursday, but Wilson played a near flawless fourth to make sure there would be no comeback.

The Trojans hit eight of 10 shots in the period, including three three-pointers, and made five of six free throws.

Jelani Memory's 23 points, most of them coming off long-range jumpers, led the Trojans, but he had plenty of support. Both Chris Rogers and Robby Park chipped in 19 points each, with the latter getting most of them with five three-pointers.

For their part, the Cougars stayed within striking distance most of the game. Joe Yoder only missed one of his six shots in scoring 10 points and collecting nine rebounds, and T.J. Miller made good on 4 of 8 attempts to finish with 10 points and six boards.

Canby was led offensively by Jeremy Stewart and Buck Stone, both of whom finished with 12 points. Stone was particularly effective at the line, where he made all six free throws he tried.

As a team, the Cougars made 19 of 52 shots.

Tuesday night against West Albany, Canby was within three points with four seconds to go before the Bulldogs sank two free throws to win by five.

Orth had his way in the paint, while on the other end of the floor the Cougars too often settled for three-point shots. They took 21 in the game and only ended up making six of them.

"That was just a case of a lack of intensity and anticipation on our part," Burke said. "We talk about denying chances in the paint, but we were giving them free tickets. We were soft and not smart."

The Cougars complicated matters by committing 15 turnovers. On the bright side, Yoder and Stewart both reached double figures with 14 and 10 points, respectively.

After this week's two league games, the Cougars will travel to South Medford High School for a tournament Dec. 28-30.

CHS wins yet another tourney,
stays unbeaten

Eight matches for the Canby High School wrestling team, eight victories. The Cougars followed up their winning performance at the season-opening Lane County Tournament with a series of four more victories last week - one of which was a defeat of McMinnville in their Pacific-9 Conference opener Wednesday.

Most recently, the team had little trouble beating all three opponents at a David Douglas tournament Thursday afternoon. Led by nine individual champions, the Cougars beat the host Scots 48-18, Beaverton 78-0 and Milwaukie 69-7.

"When you have a league dual the night before, sometimes it's a little hard to get up for tournaments," Canby head coach Dan Nugent said. "But that wasn't the case for us. We looked solid all the way through and managed to win all three of our duals.

''We realize the schedule gets a little tougher this week with Forest Grove coming to our place (Dec. 14). That should be a good test for us.''

The Cougars have yet to be tested, winning all eight of their duals so far in convincing fashion.

Thursday in Portland, Canby sported champions in Joe Kuznetsov (103 pounds), Stephen Schantin (112), Ian Gadberry (125), Drew Bayless (130), Garret Miyake (135), Pete Savory (152), Jeff Wilson (171), Marc Koch (189) and Scott Doman (heavyweight).

It all helped Canby score a meet-high 256 points, enough to outclass David Douglas (205), Milwaukie (97) and Beaverton (84).

The night before, the Cougars had an equally easy time with the Grizzlies, winning 45-16 despite giving up a forfeit at 145 pounds.

After Kuznetsov was given a forfeit at 103, Canby recorded back-to-back pins that put the visitors in control from the start. Schantin's first-round defeat of Marcus Poppen, followed by Lucas Hambleton's 55-second win at 119, put Canby up 18-0.

Gadberry continued the onslaught with his 16-3 blowout win over Ali Rana at 125, then Bayless won what proved to be one of the night's closer matches when he outlasted Brady Lambert 7-2 at 130.

Miyake followed with a 14-4 win over Kyle Dickman before the Grizzlies temporarily interrupted Canby's run with two wins and the forfeit at 145.

Canby proceeded to regain its form for the final five matches, getting wins from Jared Wilson, a 16-8 winner at 160; Jeff Wilson, a 15-10 victor at 171; Koch, who pulled off a 4-1 decision at 189; Steve Schrader, an easy 8-1 winner at 215; and Doman, who recorded a takedown in overtime to prevail 3-1 over Garrett Gillas at heavyweight.

This Thursday, Canby hosts the Vikings beginning with second-varsity matches at 5:45 p.m. The varsity will begin after they have been completed, between 7 and 7:30 p.m. It is the final test for the team before the Christmas holiday.

After the break, Canby will host an invitational on Jan. 5.

IN VARSITY II ACTION: Canby defeated McMinnville 47-24 as Travis Colvin, Lance Stewart, Josh Gustafson, Brian Sauvain, Justin Ables and Aaron Porter recorded pins.

Huskies still perfect
with Waldport win

For the first time in head coach Dennis Melcher's tenure - and for the first time in 20 years - the North Marion girls basketball team has started the year 3-0.

The Huskies defeated the Fighting Irish from Waldport 59-44 in nonleague action Friday at the Oregon Coast school.

"They are a pretty good team," Melcher said. "Heidi Stuart signed early with Portland State and she's definitely a D-1 player. We held here to 16 points, but if she had hit her outside shots, she would have went for 30."

North Marion jumped out to a 20-14 first-quarter lead, but Waldport would not go away, outscoring the Huskies in the second quarter to trail by only only five, 32-27, at the half.

"In the second half, we really stepped it up," Melcher said. "Melissa Figini finally came out. She got three fouls in the first half and had to sit out most of the second quarter. She started playing smarter basketball. Eight of her 12 points were in the second half and she started getting their post players in foul trouble."

The Huskies came out in the second half and stepped up their defense. They outscored the Fighting Irish 27-17 in the second half and expanded their lead to as many as 19 in the fourth quarter.

"Defensively, we played a pretty good zone considering I hate playing a zone," Melcher said. "They (Waldport) did a good job inside early on, but after we made some adjustments, we did a pretty good job."

North Marion struggled early on with its press, so Melcher went to a zone defense in an attempt to control Waldport's post play.

"We were the aggressors in the second half," Melcher said. "I noticed they (Waldport) were getting pretty tired in the second half, so we started pushing the ball. We were also a lot more patient than the last game."

Julie Melcher lead the Huskies with 16 points and five assists. Figini had nine rebounds to go with her 12 points, and Kelley Carpenter had a solid all-around game with eight points, seven rebounds, and four assists.

"She (Carpenter) is playing very well for us right now," Melcher said.

Kristen Kahle had 15 points and 10 rebounds, including going 7 for 9 from the free throw line.

"It is nice having her back," Melcher said of Kahle, who missed last year for health reasons. "She makes us so much more versatile because she is a good basketball player."

Melcher sees a lot of excitement in his team as well.

"They are playing with a lot of confidence right now," he said. "We need to keep fine-tuning some fundamentals and continue to work on defense, but they are getting better each game."

North Marion takes this week off before a string of three consecutive tournaments going into the Christmas break. The Huskies go to a tournament at Banks Dec. 15-16 before returning home to host an eight-team event Dec. 21-23. North Marion then travels to Seaside for another tournament Dec. 28-30.

NM pounds Seaside 68-50

Jason Scanlon picked up his second consecutive victory as head coach of the North Marion boys basketball program, as the Huskies pounded Seaside 68-50 Saturday 68-50 in nonleague action from Aurora.

Seaside jumped out to a 15-11 first-quarter lead, but the Huskies battled back in the second, outscoring the Seagulls 25-18 to take a three-point edge at the break.

In the second half, North Marion's defense stiffened while the offense continued to put the ball in the basket. After outscoring Seaside 17-11 in the third quarter, the Huskies ended the game on a 15-6 run.

"We played better defense in the second half and our shot selection was much better as well," Scanlon said. "Not turning the ball over as a big key for us."

The Huskies only turned the ball over eight times on the night while getting 13 steals and 18 assists.

Josh Miller led North Marion with 20 points, six rebounds and four steals. "He played real well," Scanlon said of Miller. "He crashed the boards and Adam (Kraft) was able to find him on the offensive end."

Ryan Krause added 18 points, going 8 for 10 from the field, while Kraft added a workmanlike nine points, seven rebounds and eight assists. Steve Miller poured in 13 points for the game, making four of the five shots he attempted.

"The kids weren't satisfied (after the win)," Scanlon said. "We shot 40 percent from the free-throw line and that will hurt us in a close game. We have certain goals we set each game. We met a couple in this one, and we didn't meet others."

The win put North Marion at 3-1 on the season. The Huskies were home again Tuesday for Sherwood and will be home for Yamhill-Carlton this Friday at 7:15 p.m.

The Huskies are also scheduled to take on Tillamook on Dec. 18 before taking a 10-day break for the Christmas holiday. The team will be in a Seaside tournament Dec. 28-30.

Details on the team's defeat of Estacada last Tuesday were featured in the Saturday edition of the Canby Herald.
