Wednesday, Feb. 20, 1991 - Canby now officially has 9,000 residents - 1,350 more than it had a decade ago. This number is based upon the 1990 U.S. Decennial Census count of July 1, 1990 by the Center for Population and Research and Census. Michael Jordan, Canby city administrator, said population growth was pretty flat in the first half of the decade with most of the city's growth occurring in the last five years. "This is about as accurate as we're going to get," he said. "If any mistakes are made in the census, they're probably on the low side. It's easier to miss than overcount people."

Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1981 - Remodeling of the Canby Elementary School District's oldest school building is converting a "depressing building that was dark and dingy" into a "better student environment," according to district Supt. Ed Miller. The $1,717,000 renovation of 35-year-old Knight School is still four to five months from completion, but students and staff moved into an $833,000 addition to the school several months ago. Included in the addition project is a play area adjacent to the gym and an addition to the north end of the old building that includes six classrooms, a media center, restrooms and storage area.

Thursday, Feb. 18, 1971 -- No decision is expected for four to six weeks in the $20,000 damage suit brought against Canby High School board members and administrators by David Schwartz, a senior. Much of the testimony reflected on the question of propriety of the CHS school dress and grooming code which earlier had been heard in the U.S. District Court. Damages noted by the plaintiff dealt with an alleged loss suffered when Schwartz, whose long hair precipitated the case, was not allowed to return to classes but was allowed to visit teachers to get his assignments.

Thursday, Feb. 16, 1961 -The second flood of the 1960-61 winter season struck the Willamette Valley last weekend following three days of almost constant rain which came when little or no snow remained at the mountain headwaters of tributary streams. High water in the Molalla River reached a point about one foot below the record of the Thanksgiving Day flood. Both last week's flood and that of November will be classed as of the "once-in-20-years" variety. Immediately below Goods Bridge the attractive Island Park resort suffered severe damage as river waters swept through the park area, washed out roads and left a litter of flotsam. Park owners, the Elton Reddekopps, had only recently finished clearing up after the November flood.
