OREGON CITY – The news certainly got better as the weekend rolled around for the Canby track and field team.With originally four athletes and six entries moving on to state from Friday’s Three Rivers League district meet, the Cougars added two relays and five more berths through the wildcard process announced Sunday by the OSAA.

CORVALLIS – Krissy Peterson finished tied for 16th at the OSAA Class 6A state championships on May 14-15 at Trysting Tree Golf Club.The Canby High School junior had a two-day total of 169 (88-81) as the lone representative for the Cougars’ girls golf team at state.

Mike Vaught wasn’t afraid to admit the past two seasons fell below expectations.Entering his third season at Canby’s football coach, Vaught and the coaching staff looked at themselves in the mirror and had to figure out what they were doing wrong and how they could get better.

CENTRAL POINT – Success in the postseason continues to elude the Canby baseball team.The Cougars dropped to Crater, 6-4, on May 21 at Crater High School in the first round of the Class 6A state playoffs.

ROSEBURG – For a long trip down south with a young team featuring one senior, the Canby softball team did its best.The Cougars fell to Roseburg, 5-1, in the first round of the Class 6A state playoffs at Roseburg High School to end their season.

After a stellar 5-0 start to the season, the Canby girls lacrosse team had high hopes of breaking out in only its second year as a varsity program.But reality set in a bit within a tough Three Rivers League that featured three of the four semifinal teams, including state champion Lake Oswego.

High school football is not the only sport gearing up this week.The Canby boys basketball team kicked off its summer schedule last Thursday, starting off with a 64-43 victory over Newberg at home.

EUGENE — Just three-tenths of a second separated the Huskies from their first gold medal at the state track and field meet in seven years. The North Marion boys 4x100-meter relay team broke the school record twice during the state meet at Hayward Field on May 25 and 26, but could not close the gap on Tri-Valley Conference rival La Salle, which outran the Huskies for the third time in eight days to win the state title.

EUGENE — Continuing a trend throughout the month of May, North Marion senior Megan Crumley took another jump forward in the discus to place fourth at the Class 4A state track meet on May 26 at Hayward Field.

EUGENE – For Canby’s 4x100-meter relay, they were happy just to make it to Eugene.Senior Brittany Gillespie, juniors Lauren Morgan and Karley Baggerly and freshman Sarah Gent found their way to state through a wildcard berth and made the most of it.
