CANBY — The Canby boys golf team has been so dominant during the conference season that its placing at Monday’s district tournament does not actually matter.
The Cougars have won the five league matches by an average margin of 22 strokes and lead the Pacific Conference standings by 14 points. The only seemingly way that Canby can miss the 6A state tournament is if it gets disqualified on both days of the district tournament.
Which is a long shot to happen.
Canby’s confidence is at a high right now as the district tournament at Heron Lakes Golf Course in Portland will be used more as a practice in preparation for state.
“Our team’s definitely the best team in league and beat everyone by quite a few strokes every (league) tournament,” Canby senior Robbie Ziegler said. “We’re going to state for sure already so districts is kind of getting us ready for state.”
But the pride of sweeping the entire league season is a goal that the Cougars want to accomplish.
“Districts doesn’t really matter for us but we still want to win,” Canby junior Alex Daniel said. “We still want to go out there and show them that we’re better than them.”
With the top two teams in the conference based on league standings heading to state, the lone drama at districts will be what team earns the second slot, which expects to be between Tigard and Tualatin.
For Ziegler, his motivation heading into Monday is to sweep the league season after placing first in the five regular season tournaments. Also at last year’s district tournament, he took second behind Tualatin’s Isiah Telles - who currently plays at University of Oregon - by five strokes.
“(Telles) beat me last year so even though districts doesn’t mean too much right now because state is all on our minds, I want to win districts and as a team, too,” Ziegler said. “Because that’s two years in a row and we haven’t done that yet since I’ve been here so two in a row would be good. And individually, I haven’t lost yet in league so if I can keep that going in districts, that’d be good.”
In the individual conference standings, Canby holds four of the top five average scores with No. 5 golfer Wyatt Hart standing ninth with an average of 80.0.
Ziegler is first in the conference with a 70.2 average, followed by Tigard’s Arthur Kim (75.0), Daniel (76.6), Canby’s Cory Larro (78.6) and Nick Layton (79.0).
At the regular season finale on Monday at Willamette Valley Country Club in Canby, the Cougars took first with a season-best 297.
“From my standpoint, I would like to see us continue on the same path that we’ve been on the past week,” Canby coach Darek Franklin said. “I think the kids have got it in their head that they can shoot under 300. If we can do the same things that we have been doing and put up a solid score, anything under 300 I’d be happy with.”
