HILLSBORO — The Canby track and field teams earned several top finishes at the Elden Keller Invitational on Friday at Hare Field in Hillsboro.
The Canby boys finished second with 105 points and Grant won the meet with 132. The Canby girls were also second with 96 points with Grant taking the meet with 146.
On the boys side, the Cougars won two events, including senior Thomas Juhala in the pole vault at 14 feet, 9 inches, which was more than a foot better than runner-up Igor Zadniprovskiy from Grant (13-6); and senior Travis Sauvain in the triple jump (42-5 1/2).
Other top finishes for Canby were sophomore Parker Forrest in the 400 meters (second, 52.10 seconds), senior Adam Mikkelson in the 110 high hurdles (second, 16.08) and 300 hurdles (fifth, 43.04), senior Austin Fricker in the 1,500 (third, 4:20.39), senior Brian Haggblom in the pole vault (third, 13-0), senior Jacob Sowles in the triple jump (third, 40-3 1/2), freshman Justin Langford in the high jump (third, 6-0), and the 4x400 relay team of Fricker, Juhala, Forrest and senior Chris Zebede (third, 3:33.69).
Zebede also took fourth in the 800 (2:05.01). In the field, senior Cole Giandomenico was fourth in the shot put (46-5 1/2) and junior Michael Doman was fourth in the javelin (154-5).
On the girls side, Canby won two events, both by sophomore McKayla Fricker in the high jump (4-11) and 800 (2:23.06).
Other top finishes for the Cougars were sophomore Melissa Fowler in the 100 (second, 12.88), senior Lindsay Hofer in the 300 meters (second, 47.34) and long jump (fifth, 15-6), the 4x400 relay of Fricker, Fowler, freshman Teri Gent and freshman Sasha Sibel (second, 4:06.31) and the 4x100 relay of Hofer, Fowler, junior Laura Copenhagen and sophomore Kylee Myers (50.61).
In conference action, the Canby boys defeated Tigard, 83-62, on April 30 and the girls fell to Tigard, 76-69.
Canby hosts Newberg on Tuesday this week at 4 p.m.
